Since the concept version of the 2016 Honda Civic Type-R made its first appearance at the 2015 New York Auto Show, speculation regarding its release date has been running rampant. Along with this there have been many rumors about what might be hiding under the hood and what the final release will look like. In every other country but the U.S. the Type-R has been available since 1997, this latest version marks the first time it will be available to buyers in and around Dallas, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, and Rockwall at Rusty Wallis Honda.
Those drivers in and around Dallas, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, and Rockwall who have been following the Type-R available in Europe will be delighted to learn that the 2016 Honda Civic Type-R will feature an all-new and more powerful engine. The 2016 Type-R will be driven by a powerful turbocharged 2.0 liter inline four cylinder VTEC® DOHC engine that makes use of the latest in variable valve timing.
This seemingly mild engine is actually capable of producing an amazing 306 horsepower courtesy of the latest in “fast spooling” turbocharger technology. Along with all of this horsepower, the Type-R is expected to produce 295 lb-ft of raw torque. Not only will this combination provide one of the fastest hatchbacks on the market, thanks to the VTEC® design and direct fuel injection, you can expect more than acceptable fuel economy and a top speed of 167 mph. Buyers will have a choice between the standard six-speed manual transmission and the latest Honda CVT transmission.
In answer to the somewhat subdued look of previous Civics, the 2016 Honda Civic Type-R sets out to shatter this image with a hot new look. The front end is now dominated by larger upper and lower grilles that have been specially modified to allow for more cooling airflow. At the same time you will find a pair of fully functional air intakes mounted in the front bumper. Their job is to route more cooling air not only into the engine compartment, but also to the front brakes.
The newly engineered front spoiler has been developed to help reduce front end lift at high speeds as well as to help direct the flow of air under the vehicle. Not only does this help reduce lift, but also when combined with the side skirts and rear fin will help to keep the Type-R sucked down towards the road surface.
The 2016 Honda Type-R also sports larger wheel arches specifically modified to fit the custom 19 inch rims. Custom made 235/35R190 tires were developed specifically to meet the speed and handling needs of the Type-R. Finally fully functional side vents have been added to the body design to help improve brake and tire cooling.
